René van der Veer
is associate professor at the Department of Education of
Leiden University, The Netherlands. He is interested in the history and theory of
developmental psychology. His most recent publications include "Tamara
Dembo's early years" (Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences,
2000) and The Social Mind (Cambridge University Press, 2000; with Jaan Valsiner).

Previous accounts of Vygotskian theory by notable scholars have been
radically different. These varying accounts will be sketched and an attempt
will be made to draw some conclusions as to the most salient features of
Vygotsky's approach.
